Back in the 90s, American Express had an advertising campaign with a catch phrase “Membership Has Its Privileges”.  Those willing to pay a somewhat hefty annual fee and charge an even heftier monthly total to the card would be eligible for some pretty impressive membership privileges.

In some cases, that same mentality has crept into the church as consumer-minded Christians “shop” for the church that can best meet their needs and wants.  While finding fellowship, support, encouragement, etc., is certainly important, it is not the primary purpose for church involvement.

At Mission Point, we believe that the primary purpose of the church is contained in Jesus’ last words to His followers…

And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.  Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.  And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”  (Matthew 28:18-20 ESV)

For that reason, those who join us at Mission Point are not called “members”, but instead “missionaries” – all equipped to share the reason for their hope at every opportunity.
